Amie's Quilt

Well, it's that time again to update the blog. With everything that is going on at my house, I was not sure I was going to be able to finish my niece Amie's quilt in time for her birthday but thanks to Missy (my sister-in-law) and my mother-in-law running Craig around for me, I was able to finish it just in time. Amie's birthday party was held on Saturday with about 50 people there. Matt & Junior came with their friend, Seth, who drove them for me, which really made it extra special for Craig. The rest of the family were surprised as well.

Anyway, since I had given Nicole (Amie's sister) the Boyd's Bear quilt for her birthday in May, Amie kind of EXPECTED a quilt for her birthday. She had asked her mom for sunglasses and Missy said, "I'll tell Auntie (me) that you want sunglasses." Apparently, Amie said to her, "I better be getting a quilt!" However, given that Auntie was planning on making her a quilt all along, I didn't want to give her the satisfaction of knowing she was GETTING one until the last minute. So, when we arrived at the party the only thing I had in my hand was my purse and a "birthday card". Amie came running out to greet us and gave me a huge hug saying "Hi, Auntie & Uncle Craig. I'm so glad you came." I saw her notice the card but she never said anything.....ha, ha, ha...her quilt was hidden in the trunk of my car. So, after some time had passed and everyone arrived, it was time to eat dinner. Amie was the first one to be served, being her birthday and all. I told Missy, "Let me know if Amie comes out of the back yard, which was where everyone was eating. I'm going to get the quilt and hide it in your bedroom." She agreed and I was able to sneak the quilt into the house.

More time passed and the party was really rolling. Everyone sang happy birthday and then it was time to open presents. Craig had a card signed by the ladies at his work (Amie worked the summer for Craig) and brought it with him to the party as well. I told her mom that I wanted Amie to open my card last....so, I placed my card with his card with the rest of the gifts; but hiding them behind some other gift bags. Amie was ripping presents open left and right. Cards with money in them, gift bags, etc. She had two bags left to open when she noticed the cards behind them. She decided to grab the cards instead of finishing with the rest of the gift bags. She opened the one Craig brought from work, which shocked Amie. She and one of the ladies she worked with didn't really get along that well. Amie said, "wow, even Susan signed the card !" It was pretty funny. Then Amie, grabbed my card and opened it....however, no money fell out. I said, Amie I need to tell you something about that and her mom said, "Amie you're not supposed to open that yet." She said okay put the card down and preceded to open her remaining two gift bags. After that was done, she picked up the card and read it. I said to her....."Honey, you know with everything that is happening at my house right now, I really wanted to do something special for your birthday but you know....I DID!!!!" I grabbed the bag with the quilt, pillowcase, and pillow inside and pushed it up to her. She yelled....."IT'S MY QUILT !!!" I just laughed. She ripped into that gift with paper flying. She pulled out the pillow first, completely bypassing the pillowcase. But she only saw the back side of the pillow, which is the way I planned it.


Then, Amie turned the pillow over and saw the HEART! She said, Oh my gosh !!! How pretty!!

Amie couldn't get the quilt out of the bag fast enough and of course, not wanting to make it easy for her...the quilt was folded so that she could only see the back side of it with the quilt label on top!...she opened the quilt and was so surprised!!! She ran over to me and hugged me saying, "I LOVE IT AUNTIE, I LOVE IT!!!"


Everyone commented on the quilt, some even asked if I sold them, which anyone who does crafts knows that you can never get the same money out of it that you put into it. But, I told her that if you ever get rid of it, it comes back to me....ha,ha. I was teasing her, of course!



All in all it was a great birthday party ! Craig was able to stay but I could tell he was starting to get tired so we decided to leave after the USC football game ended. He came home and immediately fell asleep. It was a special day and one I will always cherish ! I love making quilts for people and seeing their faces when I give it to them.

Hi Everyone....well most of you know that I never made it on the second day of the Quilter's run and why I haven't been able to update my blog for the last few months so there is no need to go into it all here! I want this to be my "happy" place ! Anyway, I finished Amie's quilt and will be posting pictures here in a couple of weeks after I give it to her for her birthday. I had a lighter week with work last week and was able to actually get most of the weekend off. I have already finished one baby quilt and will be starting another one today for a friend I work with at school who's daughter just had a baby girl. Hopefully, I'll get that one done today so I can start on the two memory quilts for two special little girls as well as the Charity Quilt for Craig (more on that to follow)! Anyway, just wanted to send my love to everyone and thanks to everyone for all their support ! Live life to the fullest every day !

Quilter's Run - 2007

Well, here is OUR Day 1 of the Quilter's Run !!! The QR actually started on Thursday last week, but since we all had to work we had to wait until Saturday to get started. The day started at 9:00 a.m. when Joy & Yvette met at my house. I had previously mapped out our entire route and got directions from store-to-store the day before. We all jumped in the car and couldn't wait to get started. As we headed out, we were deciding how we would go.....knowing that we would be at Leah's Fabric Gallery in Orange on Sunday, we bypassed them and went to our first stop Leah's in Mission Viejo. We made it there in about 30 minutes, even though traffic was bad....obviously from all the quilters having the same idea as us going to the southern stores....ha, ha, ha!!! We should have known how the day was going to go as Leah's was already sold out of the "quilter's pins" by the time we got there and only had the "2007 bar", but we were not to be discouraged and were told we could get them at the next stop. We received our first "charm", a little kitty because Miss Leah loves cats, as well as our first set of 4 "charm" squares of fabric !!! Each store was giving away these little charm fabric squares and charms. The QR was "movie themed" at each place, or were supposed to be. The ladies at the Mission Viejo store were wearing "white veil's" and I was trying to figure out what movie they were supposed to be from but it really did not matter. They were really nice and helpful. Anyway, we browsed around Leah's for a bit and decided to move on, anxious to get to the next place.

Next, stop was Sowing Sisters Quilt Shop in Carlsbad....luckily Leah's had NEW directions to their shop because they had MOVED after the flyer had been printed and sent out !!! But what a beautiful and quaint little town Carlsbad was. I had never been to Carlsbad before and we loved it. We decided to park on the main drag and walk to the quilt shop !!! The shop was cute in the middle of downtown and the people there were so nice and friendly. We were able to buy our Quilter's Run 2007 pin and got our next charm. They had lots of brochures on Janome's so I picked up quite a few. Each of us picked up something there (can't really remember what Joy & Yvette bought, but I got a pattern), we decided to move on once again.

Next stop the infamous Eleanor Burns Quilt-in-a-Day shop in San Marcos !!! It was only supposed to be like a 10-minute ride from the Carlsbad shop, but there was this teeny-tiny street sign that none of us saw, probably because we were having way too much fun giggling and laughing in the car. This was the first time we got lost along the way, snicker ! Anyway, I don't have a picture of the store but you can see it on Joy's blog at http://joy-denise.blogspot.com/ , and be sure to check out the slide-show pictures Joy took. The pictures posted here were sent to me from Yvette. Obviously, Eleanor Burns has her own parking space but it cracked us up what it said.....Eleanor Burns "The Stripper".....violators will be "stitched in the ditch"...I'm sure only quilters got a kick out of this.

Yvette and Joy especially wanted to see this place. We found some really great deals there too. Joy & Yvette each want to make the Eleanor Burns' Magic Vine quilt, but neither of them wanted to buy the book at it's retail price. We were browsing using around and one of the ladies that works there told us that there were some "damaged" books in the classroom for 50% off...low and behold, there were brand new Magic Vine books with like bent corners or whatever in there for half off !!!! Yvette & Joy each snatched one up. I have always wanted to make the double wedding ring quilt and there is a pattern in her Egg Money Quilt which has reproduction 1930's quilt blocks in it. This book was also 50% off...well, how could I possibly pass that up. They also had an entire room of material on sale for $4 a yard, and I just had to buy some.

Of course, we couldn't leave the store without Joy posing with Eleanor for a picture.

Wanting to make a getaway before I totally went overboard, we pressed on to the next stop to Quilter's Paradise in Escondido. I totally loved this store !!! We were browsing around and everyone was looking at everything and what to my surprise...I found some more burgundy material that I'm using in Amie's quilt there. I had previously purchased everything they had a Leah's in Orange when I started Amie's quilt and I fell in love with this material. I just had to buy some more so I picked up three yards. I only bought three more yards and I am KICKING myself now that I did not buy the end of the bolt because it was only a little over six yards. However, I wanted to pace myself and save some money for the other stores. I may just have to call them and ask them to send me the rest of this material because it's gorgeous. Oh, yeah, we got a "free" pattern there as well and since I spent $50 there, I'm automatically in the drawing to win a quilt !!! I loved their charm too......a martini glass !!! Although I don't drink martinis, it does remind me of a margarita so to me that's what it is !!!! Anxious to get going to the next place, we left Quilter's Paradise around 12:30 pm and were trying to find a place to eat on our way to Quilter's Cottage in Fallbrook. We stopped at a Subway (I don't even remember where) and oh my goodness what a nightmare that was....It was like 100 degrees inside this place. There were like 15 people in there who all looked miserable. I think the employees wanted to make sure NO ONE wanted to stay and eat there so they could go home...but this place literally had no air conditioning. Yvette, Joy and I were miserable until we went outside to eat, which was actually COOLER than inside !!! But, oh well, we just laughed and giggled about it.

After lunch, we went to Fallbrook or attempted to !!! This was the second time we got lost along the way. This place was unbelievably hard to find. Yvette & I get car sick and we had to go through all these winding roads. We eventually found the place, but it was SOOOO small and tiny that you had to walk the isles single file. I said to Yvette, "You know, I feel dizzy" and she said, "yeah, I thought it was the car ride, but maybe not...I feel claustrophobic !" Well, we all couldn't wait to beat it out of there. By this time we were heading back to Orange County....moving on, we hit the next place, Quilter's Coop in Temecula. What a great place that was. They apparently had some jazz festival or street festival going on and there were hundred's of people there. Jazz music coming from everywhere....Craig would have been in 7th heaven !!! This was one of the nicest quilt shops we had seen so far. Yvette even said she'd drive from her home in Cerritos back to this store if they were having a 30% off sale. Apparently, she loves wool fabric and they had tons of it. Well, we couldn't stay there forever and we headed out to our final destination, Calico Cottage in Murrieta. As far as the movie themes go, this place WINS hands down. They had Pirates of the Caribbean music playing and a cut-out life size Captain Jack. All the employees were dressed up as pirates and the store was like 65 degrees !!! We were in an island paradise. We just laughed and laughed listening to these wonderful ladies greet all the quilters with "yar, ye mate-ies !!! To the back with ye !!!" This was where we had to check in and the smell of fresh popcorn permeated throughout the shop. It was great !!! This was about 4:30 or so. We had been so hot throughout the day that we decided to stop for some frozen yogurt ! I got a smoothie, Joy got a low-carb mocha, and Yvette just got a dish of frozen yogurt ! It was the best way to end the day.

Heading back home, we hit tons of traffic on the 91 Freeway. We just continued like we had throughout the day, laughing and enjoying each other's company. Then we decided to hit Joy's house before coming all the way home so Yvette could see Joy's sewing set up ! By this time, it was now 6:00 p.m. We were all pooped and ready to call it quits. We ended up at my house around 6:20 p.m. We all said good-bye knowing we would all talk about our day in class on Sunday !!! Well, what a great day ....mishaps and all....it was a perfect day with wonderful friends !!! On to next weekend for Day 2 !

Babies, Babies, and More Babies

Ok, dear friends....you are not going to believe this !!! Four of Matt and Junior's friends are having babies, and pretty much all within two months of each other as well. I guess you could call me crazy, but I wanted to make them baby blankets in order for me to practice my "stippling" technique. Three of these kids are having boy babies and one is having a girl. The first quilt is for the baby girl and was my very first attempt at actually "stippling" it myself. I tried to do this on my Singer sewing machine but was having a bit of trouble because I could not get the darning foot to work with the feed dog cover plate, but I tried anyway.


I took the quilt to the teacher extraordinaire, Ms Janet, for critiquing and was quite embarrassed to show it to her. She said I did "okay" and I'm sure she didn't want me to be discouraged. Anyway, she told me how I could do some things better. One thing she suggested was that I could use the darning foot WITH the feed dogs and low and behold, IT WORKED!!!


Here is the close-up of this quilt. It was a panel piece and I just added borders and quilted it. I actually bought two of the same panel because I was under the impression that two babies were supposed to be girls. These kids are all related and the babies are all going to be "cousins" so I thought how cute to have similar quilts. Anyway, once I had the pink quilts made I found out that one of the girls was actually now a boy so I had to come up with something quick.

Junior's best friend, Anthony, loves the Dallas Cowboys football team and he said, "hey, Mom, do you think you could make a Cowboys quilt for his baby." Well, how could I say no. I found this material from an online fabric store and bought a couple of yards of it.


This pattern was quick and easy and since Anthony's cousin's baby turned out to be a boy instead of a girl (as mentioned above), I thought great I can make the boy cousins the same baby blanket but with different backings. Anthony's has a white backing and the other one has this blue backing that was used for the inner border and binding too!!! These were my second and third attempts at "stippling", which I think I did pretty good considering. I finally got my darning foot to work (per Janet's expert advice) and tried stippling again.

I was determined to get this down. I thought if Yvette, a friend from class, can do it, I can do it !!! So, I tried and tried. I did Anthony's quilt and then his cousin's. Here is a close up of MY third stippling attempt, which is not too bad.

I had one more quilt to make and that one was for the oldest of the babies, which was born a few months ago. I couldn't possible give three of the cousins a blanket and not his baby one.

So I found this cute Winnie the Pooh material and again just added borders & backing! This was my fourth attempt at stippling and I was very happy with this one !!! It really turned out cute. The stippling design is not the best, but it will get better with practice.




According to some of the quilting web sites that Joy and I look at it takes 200-400 hours to learn how to work a long arm machine and I'm sure it takes at least a few hundred hours on how to stipple to get to be as good as the magical Janet. But, I endeavor to persevere !!! I brought these to class last Sunday and Janet again critiqued them. She was so supportive and proud that I'm just jumping in and doing it.

Yvette did great on hers and Joy is even meandering on Patricia's quilt (a lady we work with that has cancer). We are all going to get this down !!! We are all having so much fun with it too after pulling our hair out!!! Oh yeah, the other pink quilt I made (like the first one above), my mom bought it to give as a baby shower gift on Saturday!!! Does this make me a "professional" quilter ????.....just kidding !!!

Anyway, Joy, Yvette and myself are heading out for the 2007 Quilter's Run and will be hitting quilt shops all day looking for deals (details to follow since Joy & Yvette will be snapping pictures all along the way) !!! Check out Joy's blog too for some great info.

Big Brother Fireman

Hi all !!! I think this is one of my favorite quilts !!! I made this one all in one day on Mother's Day for Tina's grandson Connor, who is going to be a big brother in September. I think I mentioned that when talking about Arianna's quilt but I finally got a picture of it posted. When Tina told me that Connor loved fireman and his bed was even in the shape of a firetruck, that was all I needed to hear. Most of you remember that Matt loved firemen too, which is why I think I love this quilt so much. It reminds me of a simpler, easier time with him when he used to be so sweet and innocent.

Anyway, I saw this pattern called "Just Can't Cut It" and I liked the big 12-1/2" blocks of main fabric. This is really a good pattern for showing off large scale prints. I started with the main focal fabric and went from there to find the rest of the material.

I foundthe red material with the fireman badges next and I thought how great that would look in the quilt.....not realizing that it's a directional fabric and the pattern called for turning the 5-patch blocks all different ways!!! I then found the green and red materials. However, when I was looking for dog material for Arianna's quilt I found this great material that was black with white paw prints on it. I thought oh my goodness I could use this on Connor's quilt too because the fireman material has dalmations in it (which in my opinion worked really, really well). It looks fabulous in the quilt !!! The only color I totally did not like was that mustard yellow material. I originally picked a brown color out to pull in the brown from the boots, and the lady who was cutting the material for me said, you know a yellow would go better. She found this yellow material and I thought....YUK !!! But, you know, it really does make the yellow in the fireman material POP ! I just loved it once I got the quilt top put together !

I used the paw print material for the inner border as well as the backing and binding. Wow, did it turn out great ! So, here is the finished big brother quilt ! I wish Matt was still into fireman because I would love to have made him one just like it.

So now, on to the 4 baby quilts (one is almost done) that need to be finished by August and Amie's quilt (which is going to be absolutely beautiful). I am only working on in class with my teacher right there because it is very difficult. I do finally have the paper-piecing down and have finished all 31 so now I can cut out the hearts and start appliquing them onto the burgundy background (pictures to follow). And then, when Connor's little brother or sister arrives I get to make another baby quilt (Tina will let me know what colors when Tiffany decides on them).

Yeah, yeah, I know.......I'M OBSESSED !!! But, I so love this hobby!

Arianna's Quilt

Well, I'm able to post a picture of Arianna's quilt because unbeknownst to me it was her birthday today. I didn't even know when her birthday was and it just so happened that I had the quilt finished. So, Sharon and I decided to give it to her this morning. I ran over the Sharon's house and gave it to her. She got a big smile on her face when she saw the dogs, remember I said she loved does and the color green.

Well, I found this doggie material at Tall Mouse near my house as well as about 4 other surrounding stores !!! You'd be surprised that there is not really much dog fabric out there...but tons of cat material. Anyway, this is what I came up with and I think it turned out pretty cute. I was a bit worried though because I wasn't sure that Arianna would like the colors.....they aren't really girl colors, but it's really cute !

Of course, I wanted to get this done quickly so I had my quilt teacher, Ms Janet Salcido, do the honors. She does fantastic work and hopefully, I will learn to "stipple" the way she can. So, on to the next set of projects; finishing Amie's, Connor's quilt, and four baby quilts.

One More Down...100 More to Go

Hi Everyone,

Well, here I am again with another finished quilt. This one is for Matt's friend, Ryan. He loved Matt's quilt and just kept asking me..."will you make me one, will you make me one? I'll pay you for it" I said, Ryan, they are very expensive and the material alone can cost anywhere from $80 to $150 dollars just to make the top. Then, you have to buy the batting, the backing material, there are classes to pay for, etc. Anyway, Ryan is a big help to me driving Matt around all the time so I figured what he spends in gas money I'll make him a quilt. He loved the black paisley material that I made with Matt's quilt and I had some left over so I incorporated it into Ryan's quilt. Boys, you know....nothing even remotely flowery and very specific, just black, white, and gray...so I was able to come up with this.

It was a pretty easy pattern and went together really simply. I love the black and paisley borders, and I wish my camera took better pictures so you could really see the detail. I saw this quilt in watercolor colors and it really was beautiful. However, this serves the purpose for the boys.

Now that this one is done, I'm deep into making my niece's quilt (Amie). Her quilt will be the most beautiful one to date. It's all done with appliqued hearts of soft pinks and greens on a deep burgundy background. She loves hearts and this pattern has 31 of them !!!! The hearts are all "paper pieced" and then appliqued. Boy, what a challenge, but a great learning experience. I won't put pictures up until after I give it to her for her birthday because I don't want her to see it.

I have also finished the "big sister" quilt for my friend, Sharon's granddaughter, but again she looks at my blog and wants to be surprised, so I'll put up a picture after I give that one to her as well. I have also finished the quilt top for the "big brother quilt for Tina's grandson. It's being quilted as we speak and I hope to give it to Tina before school lets out. If that's not enough, I have four baby quilts in the process; three ready to be quilted and one that needs to be made. Ok, go ahead.......I OBSESSED !!!!! It's therapy and so much fun. Besides, I made the big brother and big sister quilts all in one "free sew" day at Leah's. If the room is not being used, students can sign up for it. Well, that's what I did. I made those two quilts, Sharon's on Mother's Day and the other one on Memorial Day. Guess what I'm doing for Father's Day ??? You guessed it !!! Junior and I went in together and got Craig three tickets to the Dodger game. Gee, Craig, Junior and Matt will leave me all alone on Father's Day, what a shame....NOT!!! I get to go sew and not feel guilty.

Anyway, I have to work...but I'd rather sew. Many more pictures to follow. Love to all of my wonderful family and friends !!! Life is too short, you have to grab the bull by the horns !!!

Surprise !

Hi all, well I just had to post something today. I was SOOOOO surprised when I went to work today ! There were some cards and gifts waiting there for my upcoming birthday !!! Tina gave me this wonderful almond scented hand cream and the best card ever !!! It suits my situation totally !!! Pat gave me a gift certificate for a manicure or pedicure at her nail place (one of my favorite ways to get pampered), but there was also this beautiful bouquet of flowers from Sharon's garden ! They were simply gorgeous. Sharon has a beautiful backyard full of wonderful flowers, hummingbirds, goldfinches, etc.

I was so intrigued at one of the flowers in particular. Tina pointed it out to me right away. It's the most unusual rose I have ever seen. It's actually brown and IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE that color!!! It's absolutely gorgeous. There are also some very different looking flowers that are white and a pink color. They don't even look real, but are. I'll have to ask Sharon what the name of those are because they are really, really, pretty.

Anyway, I just want to say thanks to these wonderful ladies for making my day so special !!! They are so wonderful to work with and to be friends with. I love them all and Thank you all so very, very much !!!

Oh yeah, since Sharon has birds in her backyard too....I thought I'd post a couple of pictures of the birds outside my office window. These are some that I get to enjoy everyday !!! The first picture is a hooded oriole. The next two pictures are a bullock's oriole, and the last picture are my goldfinches.

Nicole's Sweet 16 !

Hi all !!! Well, I finally was able to give my niece Nicole her Boyds Bear quilt. What a hard time keeping this one a secret !!!! Ever since Nicole was a little girl, her mother, Missy started her collection of plush Boyds Bear. Well, that's all "Auntie" needed to hear. I love giving my family & friends things that they collect. Anyway, I don't know how many bears I have given Nicole over the years, but I always give her one for her birthday and for Christmas. Well, this year is her 16th birthday, and I wanted to give her something special. So last year around Christmas, I found this Boyds Bear material on E-bay and ordered enough to make a quilt for her. I thought....wow....what a special gift, a Boyds Bear quilt handmade by Auntie, something she will always remember! I wanted a pattern that would showcase the bear material and I found a perfect one. I started making the quilt right away so it would be ready in time for her birthday. It went together pretty easy, but of course the hardest part is actually quilting it !!! But, I did quilt it all by myself on my sewing machine.


Nicole's birthday is exactly one week before mine so I went over this last weekend and gave her the quilt. She was so surprised at the "big gift bag" Auntie brought in. But, was so delighted to see what was inside. The smile on her face was all I needed to see. She loved the quilt and is using it as her new bedspread. However, I hope she uses it and wears it out so I have an excuse to make her another one....although it probably would not be made with Boyds Bear material.






Of course, I always go overboard and bought way too much material...so, I just had to make something else. What better than a matching decorative pillow and pillowcase out of the same material !!! Of course, this was a total blast. I have never made a pillow before and it really came out nice. I was really proud of it. Everybody in my quilt class loved the pattern and colors of this quilt.

I stitched in the ditch around each square and then I stitched around the borders. Finally, I tried something new and "stippled" around the outer bear border going in between bears in a random pattern, as per my extraordinary teacher, Janet, had suggested. I was a very intimidated but of course Janet is always so supportive.

I really can't wait to go over to her house next time and see her entire collection of Boyds Bears, her special quilt, and accessories decorating her room !!! Of course, Amie, Nicole's sister is jealous according to Nicole, but Auntie has a surprise for Amie this year too (she is my goddaughter, you know) !!! Anyway, Missy has put in her order for a "king size" quilt and I told her I would be happy to "piece" it if she picks out the material, pattern, and pays for it !!! I would definately NOT quilt THAT one !!! It's going to someone with a long arm machine because I would want it to be perfect for my wonderful sister-in-law, Missy !!!

Kaitlyn's Quilt

Hi all ! Well I know it's been a long time in between posts but pretty soon I'll be able to post more frequently as I get birthday quilts done and out of the way ! I won't post those pictures until after I give them just in case they see my blog.

In the meantime, I'm posting a picture of a quilt I made for one of the terrific ladies I work with at school named Sharon (actually I made it for her daughter-in-law, Connie, for her newest daughter, Kaitlyn). Her son and daughter-in-law have two adopted children, Arianna and Kaitlyn. I promised Arianna that I would be making her a "big sister" quilt too ! Arianna told me she loves dogs and the color green, so I'll see what I can come up with. Hopefully, I'll be able to get some more of the green material that is in Kaitlyn's quilt to put in Arianna's. I think that would be really special to have both sisters with some of the same material !!! Sharon actually helped picked out the material from some samples that I brought in, which matched Connie's decor. It was so neat when I got to school on Wednesday this week and waiting in the lobby were Sharon, Connie, Arianna, and little Kaitlyn. Sharon wanted me to give it to Connie, which I was so proud to do. Thanks, Sharon, that really meant a lot to me! Sharon is such an inspiration to me and is so strong in her faith ! I wish I had have the faith that she does.

I have such a wonderful strong support system at school with all the classy ladies there (Tina, Debbie, Sharon, Pat, and of course Joyce). I don't really get to see Sharon or Debbie very much because Sharon is usually gone by the time I get to work and Debbie works on the days I don't, but I basically finish doing some of the things they don't have time for like finishing attendance, going through the mail, and filing.

Anyway, I really love making quilts for people. It's my therapy of course. I already have material to make Tina's grandson, Connor, his "big brother" quilt. Tina's daughter is expecting her second child later this year so of course I just "have to" make one for her newest grandchild too !!! ha, ha, ha !!! Just kidding.....I can't wait to make them and Connor's quilt will be all done in a fireman theme (Pictures will be posted at a later date).

Project Linus & Aidan's Quilt

Well, I was able to finish my quilt in time for Project Linus. My quilting shop where I take my class supported this wonderful cause. These quilts are given to abused or traumatized kids by police officers, kids removed from their homes by social workers, preemie babies, AIDS babies, etc. Project Linus gives away over 1000 blankets a day to kids. My niece Tricia had preemies and I wanted so much to be a part of this project.



My teacher, the ever wonderful, Ms Janet, was the leader of the project. They had about 20 women show up and quilt blankets all day,(including my bestest buddy, Joy, who documented the entire day---see the link to her blog below, you will be astonished).

Janet's personal goal was to make 40 blankets from start to finish from 10 am until 4 pm. She exceeded her goal by everyone making 61 quilts with 30+ more quilts donated ahead of time by other people (like me) for grand total of 91 quilts to be donated just from our shop in Orange.

I quilted around each animal and the trees in this blanket and then made diamond shapes in the blue sections and the multi-colored corners and straight seams on the green border. I have to say, I am pretty proud of this quilt. It was a worthy cause and now that I know about Project Linus, I hope to be able to contribute more next year and maybe work the room like Joy did this year.

Also, There is a teacher that I work with at school who had preemie twins in November. Sadly, she lost one baby but the other, Aidan, is doing very well. He's still in the hospital but is getting stronger every day. I found the most wonderful material and just had to make a quilt to give to her for when Aidan comes home. Here is the top to Aidan's quilt, not quite finished....it still needs to be backed and quilted. I love this material because it has all these perfect sayings on them like, "our little miracle", and what a miracle little Aidan is.

Well, I want to get this published on my blog. I'm almost finished with my niece's quilt too, but I can't post pictures of it until after I give it to her for her birthday ! More on that to come ! I've been quilting only since May 2006 and have completed 6 six quilts to date. Have two more to start planning and working on as well.

Xmas 2006

Well, dear friends, I finally am able to update my blog (after several attempts of switching over to the new blogger....sheesh). Anyway, I am finally able to get a picture of Junior with his quilt on my blog too. We had so much fun and it was a terrific Christmas for all of us. Matt joined in at my brother's house and he went for Christmas dinner at Missy's too !!! It made it nice for everyone involved to see Matt. Junior was welcomed with opened arms and has fit right into the family and extended family. Junior started working for Craig about two weeks ago and is doing very well. He'll be getting his first paycheck this Friday and he's already talking of saving money to get his own cell phone and possibly save for a car, which would help me in the long run so I wouldn't have to drive him to work everyday at 10:00 a.m. It looks like he'll be going full time and if that happens, it won't be long before he's out on his own. Anyway, he's doing great and is getting his life together. He has a very sweet girlfriend who loves to just sit and watch TV. She doesn't have to "go out" all the time and have him spend money. She just likes spending time together, even with the "parents" around. We all watch TV together and have lots of laughs. Matt, of course, does his own thing. We all wish he would spend more time with us, but he's into his own thing. We love him so much and wish he wanted to spend time with us too. Junior loves to "kick it with his brother" when Matt wants to. Anyway, I have to go to work at the school. The table runners were a big hit and they all loved them. I'm almost finished with my niece's quilt and am starting on new baby quilt for a teacher at school. I hope they like it and I'm getting involved in Project Linus, which gives baby quilts to CHOC Hospital for preemies, AIDS babies, homeless kids, etc. I'm really, really excited about that ! Matt's Quilt

Well, boys and girls, I finally finished Matt's quilt. Actually, it has been done for a couple of weeks now but just finished the binding on it last week. Matt was really, really sick and had been out of school for two weeks with an abscess on his tonsil, which had to be aspirated....long story.....but anyway, I surprised Matt with his quilt. He looked at my hands and said, "Is it done?" I said yes. He was laying with an old yellow thermal blanket on and I laid his quilt over him. He said..."No, mom, take the yellow blanket off." I took the yellow blanket off and then laid the quilt over him. He said, "thanks mommie, I love it"....I told him I had to have a picture of the quilt though too for my book. He said, ok, but don't put it on your blog....oh well, tough, because here it is...




Needless to say, I haven't been able to get it away from him since. I took it out of his room to show my mom this weekend and he had a fit saying...."that blanket doesn't leave my room." He tells his friends, you can't sit on this blanket either. So, I'm thrilled he loves it. I even made a matching pillowcase.

I've made Junior's quilt as well and am finishing the binding on it too as well as made a pillowcase for him too. However, I won't be posting a picture of his quilt until after I give it to him for Christmas because he does not know it's for him and he might see my blog. Also, if I have time, I'll be making new quilted Christmas stockings for Matt and Junior. Matt's has been used since he was a baby and I'll be making a more "grown-up" stocking for him. Pictures of all these things to follow.

Here's Matt's

Well, here's Matt's quilt....well, the top anyway! These pictures are close-ups of the fabric because my camera does not do justice to the material for some reason. Maybe because of the flash, not sure. Anyway, it's really coming along nicely.





There were two sets of blocks I had to make that were mirror images of each other (had to really concentrate on that one). Then you follow a puzzle piece when sewing them all together to get the finished look.




It was really confusing on how to get them sewn together. I had to make one strip of 4 blocks to make each row following the puzzle piece. Then I sewed each strip as I finished it so I wouldn't screw it up. I only had to rip the blocks apart twice (pretty good, I think if you were to see the pattern) !!






When I got home from class, I only had 3 remaining rows to put on the quilt in order to complete the top so I did that at home. Now, all I have left to do is put on two borders, batting, binding, backing, and it's ready to be quilted. This one went together so quick. I've only worked on it for 4 weeks.

It's Finally Finished

Well, dear family and friends, my first quilt is finally finished. Actually, it's been finished for a couple of weeks now but my mom kidnapped it for a while so she could show it around. She works with a couple of ladies that quilt and she wanted them to see it as well as her doll class ladies. So by the time I got it back from her and got a picture of it with my teacher, I am just now getting a chance to post a picture of it on my blog. So, here it is....



The back of the quilt is the same lavendar color as the inner border and binding. I also "machine quilted" it all by myself on my little Singer sewing maching (what a pain !!!) Quilting it yourself is very difficult, at least for me it was, having to go around all the squares. My teacher had me start in the center and work my way out towards the edges. The outer squares were easier than the center ones. You have to fight the quilt most of the time and push, pull, squeeze, roll, stretch, etc ! But, I'm glad I tried quilting it myself at least once, just for the experience. It would have been a lot easier if I had a long arm quilting maching or a "Little Gracie", but oh well it was still fun thanks to the most wonderful teacher, Janet. I just love her!!! She makes class so much fun and before you know it class is over. So, I just had to get a picture of her and I holding my first quilt.














Here we just couldn't stop laughing....

I've started Matt's quilt now and it's coming along really, really nicely. Everyone in class thought it was too plain because it's all done in black, white, & gray (Matt picked the colors & pattern), but I picked out the material for his approval. It's really going to be beautiful. Pictures of that will follow, once I get the blocks finished. Thanks again, to my bestest buddy for starting me on this wonderful hobby ! Love to all !!!
